Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon visited the Slovenian community in Bavaria at the invitation of the Consulate General of the Republic of Slovenia in Munich in cooperation with the Bayerisch-Slowenische Gesellschaft e.V. on the occasion of the Slovenian Culture Day.
A musical opening programme by the renowned zither player Tajda Krajnc was followed by a discussion with the Minister led by the Slovenian Ambassador to Germany, Dr Ana Polak Petrič.
The discussion was divided into three sections:
Slovenia's role in the international community: Minister Fajon and Dr Polak Petrič spoke about the power of the small state of Slovenia as a voice for integration and an advocate of international law and human rights. The opening of new embassies in Algeria, Ethiopia and the Philippines was particularly emphasised.
The future of the EU: the emphasis here was on the importance of EU enlargement for a stronger community. The discussion also touched on the rise of Euroscepticism, emphasising that constructive criticism is welcome for the promotion of dialogue and the search for improvement, but destructive anonymous criticism is problematic.
Slovenian diplomacy: The speakers outlined various types of diplomacy, including economic, scientific and cultural diplomacy, as well as sports and bee diplomacy, a speciality of Slovenia. They also emphasised that Slovenian diplomatic and humanitarian projects are smaller but still extremely valuable.
The event ended with numerous questions from the participants. The younger guests were particularly interested in what mistakes could have led to the recent rise in Euroscepticism. They also asked how the Minister assessed the Slovenian brain drain and how European competitiveness could be increased. The official part of the event was followed by a social get-together.
